2003 marcos b. armijo sports aquatic center

Mayor’s Award for Design Excellence 2003

Recently completed, this 33,834 sf facility’s scope of work included the demolition of an existing outdoor pool, the construction of a new indoor competition pool and recreational pool, and the alternate to remodel the existing bathhouse. The design challenge for this project was the integration of the pool with the existing 1960’s recreation center. Our design goal was the creation of a facility in harmony with the neighboring buildings while maintaining a scale appropriate to the Paseo de Los Heroes Park to the South. Conceptually, the experience or journey through the pool will create a lasting impact, reinforcing the aquatic image. The curved roof brings to mind a wave crashing against the shore. The shade louvers along the south side create a play of light and dark against the large brick pilasters that carry the roof. This play of light and dark is reminiscent of the reflections cast by water ripples. It with great pride and joy that we see the community, both young and old, enjoy this facility and all it has to offer.
